being inside looking out
      a kid's nook under the stairs
      or under in the floor-level kitchen cupboards
      later, a covered balcony
these spaces give us a defined area in which we exercise control
and grow the confidence
to exit said spaces
and to enter the world beyond them
      the hallway
      the kitchen
      the neighbourhood
