rattling along underground
metal breaking silence
a mother
her sleeping toddler
and across the aisle, a woman, thirty-something
the toddler wakes, crying
the mother adjusts her shirt and bra
offers a pale breast
the woman's eyes fill with silent water
her hand moves to her flat stomach
